Getting a treatment center to show up higher on Google Maps is hard. Most local SEO advice gives you a long list of things to do. But which parts of that list matter most for treatment centers?
We looked at 200 treatment-related Google Business Profiles in 20 cities. Then we compared profiles near the top of the Maps list with profiles farther down. We wanted to see which common SEO tips showed up more often in the higher results.
Google says local results depend on relevance, distance, and prominence. Complete business information can help Google understand a profile. More reviews and stronger ratings can also help. Google does not share its full ranking formula. Google’s local ranking guidance
This is not a ranking experiment. It cannot prove that one change caused a profile to move. It shows patterns worth checking in your own market.
What the local SEO community usually recommends
Local SEO professionals usually recommend the following steps for a Google Business Profile:
- Use the real business name, address, phone number, and hours.
- Choose accurate categories and list the services offered at that location.
- Write a clear business description and add current photos.
- Ask for honest reviews and improve the experience behind the feedback.
- Reply to reviews with care.
- Share useful posts and check every call, form, and appointment link.
- Link to a page that explains the facility, care options, and next step.
- Support the profile with accurate website and local business information.
These steps fit Google’s relevance, distance, and prominence framework. They do not carry the same weight in every city. Distance can matter a great deal, and a profile edit cannot change it. Our study helps show which visible items separated these treatment-related results.
What stood out across 200 rehab-related profiles
| Profile characteristic | Positions 1–3 | Positions 8–10 | What we noticed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Median reviews | 92 | 62.5 | 47% more reviews at the median |
| Average rating | 4.63 | 4.45 | A modest overall difference |
| Visible owner post | 63.3% | 46.7% | One of the clearer visible gaps |
| Treatment word in name | 85.0% | 66.7% | Common in both, more common near the top |
| City in name | 38.3% | 30.0% | A smaller difference |
| Specific website path* | 32.2% | 17.2% | More top profiles linked beyond the homepage |
| Sampled review reply share | 46.7% | 46.5% | No meaningful separation |
* Among profiles with website links: 59 profiles in positions 1–3 and 58 in positions 8–10.
1. What did our research identify about reviews?
Facilities near the top of the results usually had more reviews and a higher rating than facilities farther down the list. The median top-three profile had 92 reviews and a 4.63 rating. Profiles in positions 8–10 had a median of 62.5 reviews and a 4.45 rating.
This does not mean every treatment center needs 92 reviews. The number that matters depends on the market. In Detroit, the sample median was 18 reviews. In Denver, it was 155.5.
What should a treatment center do? Compare its reviews and rating with similar facilities nearby. If there is a clear gap, build a simple process for asking for honest reviews. Keep improving the experience people are talking about.
2. What did we find about review replies?
Replying to reviews did not separate the top results from the lower results. The top group replied to 46.7% of the reviews we sampled. The lower group replied to 46.5%.
What should a treatment center do? Reply because it can help people who read your profile. Keep each reply short and respectful. Do not share private information or confirm that someone received treatment.
3. What should a treatment center do with categories, services, and its description?
These are still important parts of a profile. But Google did not show the full category, service, and description details for every listing we reviewed. We could not tell if a certain number of categories or services helped a profile rank higher.
What should a treatment center do? Choose the most accurate main category. Add services that the facility really offers. Write a clear description that explains what the center does. Use the real business name. Google’s business representation guidelines
4. What did we find about business names?
Higher-ranking profiles were more likely to have words like rehab, recovery, treatment, detox, or addiction in their name. We saw those words in 85% of the top group and 66.7% of the lower group. That does not mean a business should add keywords to its name.
City names did not stand out as much. Most top profiles did not include the city in their name. Use the name people see in the real world.
5. What did we find about posts, photos, and action links?
Higher-ranking profiles were more likely to show a recent owner post. We found posts on 63.3% of the top group and 46.7% of the lower group. We did not find a difference in the photo counts we could see. Appointment links were rare in both groups.
What should a treatment center do? Add helpful posts when you have useful information to share. Use real and current photos. Test every phone number, form, appointment link, and message option.
6. What website pages did profiles link to?
Most profiles sent people to the homepage. We found 140 homepage links and 52 links to a deeper page. In our top-versus-lower comparison, 32.2% of the higher profiles linked beyond the homepage. Only 17.2% of the lower profiles did.
We also inspected the linked pages when they were readable. We checked page content and address details for 190 websites. We did not give every page a formal city-match score, so we cannot say that every link matched the listing’s exact location.
What should a treatment center do? The page should match the location in the Google Business Profile. A Burbank facility should not send people to a Pasadena location page. The page should clearly show the facility, the care it offers, and how to contact the team.

What should treatment centers focus on first?
Start with accurate profile information. Then compare reviews and ratings with similar facilities nearby. Make sure the website link is useful. Keep posts and photos current. Review categories, services, and other local information after the basics are in place.
No list of profile edits can guarantee a higher Maps position. Distance, website strength, business age, and other factors also matter. This study helps show where to begin.

How we did the research
We reviewed 200 Google Maps profiles from 20 city searches. Each search used “drug rehab [city] [state].” We compared positions 1–3 with positions 8–10. These are Maps list results, not map-pack rankings or organic website rankings.
